Thomas Karlsson

February 9 - March 5

Angelika Knäpper Gallery proudly presents new works by Thomas Karlsson.

Born in 1964 and trained at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm.

Karlsson has participated at several exhibitions in Sweden and abroad.

In Thomas Karlsson’s artistic practice paradoxes such as accuracy and chance, hard and soft,

organic structures and shapelessness, has always been a unifying rather than a dividing force.

Karlsson’s earlier works had no clear beginning or end and there was no way of telling which side

was up or which side was down. Amorphic artifacts swelled out of their moulds and engulfed

entire rooms and climbed up to the ceiling, or hanged above the ground, defying the laws of physics.

Objects from everyday life shaped the abstract sculptures and were always left as a trace of the creation process.

In the new works all that once was crucial when creating the sculptures has been taken away.

What is left are the guts, but of what?

The new sculptures expose both internal and external structures. They embrace and expose at the same time

what has been left out and what has remained.

They raise questions about our own choices in life, what we show and what we choose to hide.

Thomas Karlsson works within a language where he constantly communicates with our intellect

or perhaps even better, our shortcomings.
