FORT KNOX
2005
When you search the web or libraries, you will only find very few images
showing the interior of “Fort Knox” and now by law “worthless gold“.
In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt confiscated the gold of the American people in order to fill the requirement of gold = dollar. First 1968 congress voted to remove that reserve requirement. This was a start of fundamental
restructuring of the international monetary order.
The interesting phenomena that somehow always captures my attention
is the combination of sophisticated technique (the great security vault) vs.
a beautiful and “worthless” surface (the gold).
In the “Fort Knox” works I am trying to describe this relation by letting
extreme technique (slow and precise) produce surfaces which become a kind of emblems for the hidden treasure.
