Jan De VliegherTreasurySeptember 24 – October 23, 2011Opening reception Saturday September 24, between 1 and 5pm
Jan De Vliegher, Schatkamer 4, 2011, 133x200 cm, oil on canvas
Jan de Vligher (born 1964) lives and works in Bruges, Belgium. Tresaury is his fifth separate show with Angelika Knäpper Gallery. The exhibition presents new paintings with imagery drawing from, amongst others the collection of Victoria and Albert in London.
Light, form and colour are the crucial elements within De Vliegher’s paintings. His works are purely painterly, never striving to mimic reality or give any naturalistic interpretations of the world. Even so, a relationship to the real world is maintained, but the objects are nugatory and appear rather as alibi for extravagant studies in paint on canvas, or as carriers of light, form and colour. De Vliegher is interested in the painterly processes and the works are often almost abstract. He doesn’t wish to tell us a story. But he gives us his version of the world we inhabit.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the gallery for any further information.
Opening hours: Tuesday – Friday, 11-18, Saturday and Sunday 12 -16.
